Finding out what a card is worth

Most people asking this question have just found a box — a childhood collection, an inherited binder, a shoebox from a house move — and have no idea whether they're sitting on something or on bulk. You don't need to learn the hobby to get an answer. Photograph a card, and the scanner tells you roughly what band it falls into.

The four things that decide the number

1. Which printing it is. The single biggest factor, and the one that's easiest to get wrong by eye. Same art, same name, ten times the price.
2. How rare that version is. Holo, full art, alternate art, and secret rares are separate markets from the plain version.
3. What condition it's in. Centring, edges, surface, and corners. Near Mint versus played can halve a card's value.
4. Whether anyone wants it right now. Magic prices follow tournament play and rotation; Pokémon follows nostalgia, reprints, and hype.

When a card is worth getting graded

Grading costs money per card and takes time, so it only pays on cards where a high grade multiplies the value — typically raw cards already worth a meaningful amount that look clean under a light. Grading a bulk common costs more than the card will ever return. Check the raw value first, then decide.

Are old cards always worth money?

No. Age helps but doesn’t decide it — print run, rarity, and condition matter far more. Plenty of 1990s cards were printed in enormous quantities and are worth very little, while some recent cards are worth hundreds.
