The honest answer to "what's this card worth" is almost always "it depends on the printing." A Charizard from Base Set 1st Edition and a Charizard from a modern reprint are the same Pokémon and nowhere near the same money. How Pokémon card prices are set

Pokémon singles are priced by the market, not by a publisher. TCGplayer and Cardmarket aggregate real listings and sales, and that's the number collectors actually trade on. Prices move with:

• Set and edition. 1st Edition, Shadowless, and Unlimited printings of the same card diverge enormously.
• Rarity treatment. Holo, reverse holo, full art, alternate art, gold secret rare — each is its own market.
• Condition. Near Mint commands a large premium; edge wear and whitening cut value fast.
• Grading. A PSA 10 can be worth many times its raw equivalent, which is why graded and raw prices are tracked separately.

Cards worth checking twice

If you're going through an old collection, slow down on Base Set holos, any card marked 1st Edition, full-art and alternate-art cards from recent sets, and promos from events or box sets. These are where the value concentrates — the rest of a binder is usually bulk.
